Gilas Pilipinas began its preparation for the FIBA World Cup qualifier this November by forming a 23-man pool from which the final line-up will be culled. Coach Chot Reyes, fully aware that rivals Japan and Chinese-Taipei already started training in October, chose players who made up the Gilas Pilipinas teams in the SEABA held in Manila last May and the FIBA Asia Cup held in Lebanon last August to ensure there is already familiarity with the system that the national team employs.

Leading the charge for the Filipinos will be former NBA player Andray Blatche, 4-time Philippine Basketball Association MVP Junemar Fajardo, Asia's best point guard Jason Castro, and US NCAA Division 1 products Gabe Norwood (George Mason), Japeth Aguliar (Western Kentucky), and Matthew Wright (St.Bonaventure). Also in the line-up are Raymond Almazan, Troy Rosario, RR Pogoy, Calvin Abueva, Kevin Alas, Baser Amer, Mac Belo, Carl Bryan Cruz, Russell Escoto, Kevin Ferrer, Jio Jalalon, Allein Maliksi, Von Pessumal, Kiefer Ravena, LA Revilla, Terrence Romeo, and Mike Tolomia.

The Gilas pool began its practices behind closed doors last November 3 and have stepped up its training by holding twice a day practices beginning November 6. Blatche is expected to arrive on November 12 to boost the team. Gilas Pilipinas will play its first game on November 24 against host Japan. They then play its first home qualifying game at home on November 27 against Chinese-Taipei which will be missing the services of injured naturalized player Quincy Davis.
