Boxing superstar and Philippine Senator Manny Pacquiao has officially launched a new league that aims to boost the basketball scene in the Philippines. This is the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) which is scheduled to begin on September 23, Through this initiative, Senator Manny Pacquiao hopes to further contribute to the development of basketball in the country, particularly at the grassroots level. Pacquiao, who is also officially listed as the playing coach of the Kia Picanto in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), says the MPBL endevours to provide not only livelihood to aspiring players but also opportunities for them to show their talents and be discovered by scouts and teams from the bigger leagues in the country.

The MPBL's operations will be overseen by sports journalist Snow Badua who will serve as the league commissioner and former PBA player Zaldy Realubit who is the MPBL Operations Head. The MPBL will have 2 parralel tournaments, a national league and an inter-barangay league, and the games will follow the home-and-away format. The main league will be the national league which will be comprised of 12 teams from different cities across Metro Manila, North Luzon, and South Luzon. All teams will be bannered by all-Filipino lineups. Filipinos born and raised abroad will be allowed to play if they can secure certifications from the Bureau of Immigration and Department of Justice that prove their Filipino lineage. Since the teams will be representing specific cities, they will be required to ensure that at least 4 players from their 12-man lineup are residents of the city they are playing for. The teams in the national league will be competing in 5 conferences throughout the season. These conferences are named Rajah, Datu, Lakan, Mumbai, and Urduja. The team that wins the most number of conferences will bag the Supremo Crown which also comes with a cash prize of P1,000,000 at the end of the season.

The inter-barangay tournament will be played in the local government unit of each of the teams in the national league. The national league teams can call up outstanding players whom they discover from the inter-barangay tournament and include them in their national league lineup during the course of the seaon. Commissioner Badua says they are currently negotiating with a television network to air the national league games. For the inter-barangay league, the games can be watched thru online streaming.
