Giorgi Shermadini's Free Throws - Jan 28, 2012

Basketball junkie Yarone Arbel has been traveling the globe to watch games for almost a decade. He works as an analyst for official websites of the top competitions and events in European basketball. He also uses his experience and broad network of connections to provide consulting and scouting services for clubs at all levels.

In what has become almost a ritual, Bennet Cantu used the push of its fans to get another narrow home win. After a 1-point win over Olympiacos and a 3-point win over Caja Laboral, now came 79-78 over Zalgiris. It was what we like to call 'a great Top 16 game.' Two crazy shots to beat the shot clock on each side, both made it to the Top 10 plays of the week, a great comeback and a thrilling finish. Once again Giorgi Shermadini (216-C-89) was the man to make the final play to decide, this time with a single point and then a single miss from the foul line that we'll get back to shortly. With eight minutes to go, Zalgiris was up by 13, but the hosts took over with a great blitz. Then came the most impressive part. Both teams hit 15 free throws in a row in the closing minute. The miss to break the streak was an intentional one by Sonny Weems, who took his own rebound to tie the score with 3 seconds to go. Then Shermadini went to the foul line and made his first to push Cantu's streak to 11 made free throws in a row. He missed the last one, but that forced Zalgiris to take a tough long shot that missed and Cantu won the game. Cantu was 8 of 12 until the last minute from the foul line, and added 11 in 12 to take a very important win. One that made Maccabi's coach David Blatt say: 'Now we'll fight with Cantu for the second spot in the group.' No bigger compliment than that for Cantu and its Coach Andrea Trinchieri, yet Cantu isn't looking for compliments. That's why it's fighting with Maccabi for the second spot in Group H.
