Devaluating the NBA Player - Oct 5, 2011

If the Federal Reserve were the NBA, Chairman Bernanke would likely say the NBA is on the brink of faltering!

The NBA has cancelled pre-season games, estimated to cost the league $200 Milliion. But of greater concern is the declining credibility of the underlying product, the marketability of the players and the game.

NBA 'star' Deron Williams went 6-28 from the field over two games as Besiktas surprisingly failed to qualify for the Eurocup (a step below Euroleague) regular season.
So, let's get this straight. An NBA star pg playing in his prime could not impact a game against a rag-tag team from Belgium?

He and his NBA buddies are fighting over 3% of BRI?

Look, Deron Williams can play basketball. But we may begin to wonder if he is any better than AJ Slaugher, the unknown guard of DEXIA MONS-HAINAUT.

Did Deron Williams make the NBA or did the NBA make Deron Willliams?

I'm sure the two sides at the negotiating table differ on that answer.

At least Anna Kornakova had something else to offer the viewing public as she got destroyed on the court.

Here is where the lockout really hurts.... Deron Williams is a marketing tools, who happens to play basketball. When he attached himself to Besiktas, his domestic marketing value dropped, because he is no longer exclusive to the NBA. Sure, he might pick up a Besiktas Shipyard endorsement in Istanbul, but he, the Nets, and the NBA will suffer for his abandonment of the hand that feeds him.

Unfortunately, Stern cannot simply lower the Fed discount rate. The only solution is the realization that the long term cost of a lockout will far exceed any short term gains made at the negotiating table.

If the two sides do not act soon, Anna Kornakova has my vote as the first scab to cross the picket lines.
