Politehnica Iasi and Cuadripol Brasov relegated - May 30, 2011

With the season's finale still being disputed, we know who the two teams are that will play in the Divizia B in the next season.
Politehnica Iasi and CSU Cuadripol SCM Brasov lost their 3rd-round play-outs series, so they are releagated. These two teams were ranked 15th and 16th after the regular season, the last and second-last from the championship.
As it was clear that Brasov will relegate, given the fact that the only players aged 25 or higher were Zeljko Bubanja and Radu Paliciuc, the rest of the team being juniors. In the first round of the play-outs, Brasov faced Otopeni, a team which narrowly missed a play-off berth, losing in the last round of the regular season against Oradea. Otopeni won the first two matches of the series, but in the third match Brasov managed to make a surprise, winning the match 81-79. This was only the second match won by Brasov in this championship. Otopeni eventually won match four, so they will play one more season in Romania's upper class basketball division. Brasov were to face Craiova in the decisive series, and Brasov's coach, Milorad Perovic , said that Brasov could offer the surprise, winning the series. This were proved only empty words, as Brasov lost all the three matches of the series, so Craiova remains in the first league, while Brasov relegates, after a 12-year tenure in Divizia A.
Politehnica Iasi had a much more interesting way onto relegation. In the first play-out round, they were about to face Energia Rovinari, a series which was announcing some intersting clashes. Iasi managed to win the first match of the series, on the road in Rovinari, so everybody started wondering if they could survive against such a powerful opponent. After losing a very harsh game two, with some controversial decisions from the referees, Iasi could have remained in the first league if they won bot matches from their home ground. It was about to be the other way around, with Rovinari getting two landslide victories, so the team to play another season in Divizia A was Rovinari. However, there was still a chance for Iasi to play in the first league one more year. In the second round of the play-outs, the two teams which have promoted last season were fighting for a single place left in the Divizia A. Miercurea Ciuc had the home court advantage, a fact which proved to be crucial. After the first two matches played in Miercurea Ciuc, the hosts gathered a 2-0 lead, but Iasi managed to tie the series, 2-2, so the team to relegate was about to be determined in the decisive match played in Miercurea Ciuc. At haltime th scoring table showed 50-43 for Miercurea Ciuc, but Iasi had a comeback in the 3rd quarter, so with 10 minutes to go the table showed 79-77 for the guests. Iasi managed to get in front some times, but Miercurea Ciuc had a fantastic end of match, managing an outscore of 13-2, and so winning the match 104-101, and getting a berth in the 2011-2012 Divizia A.
